What Makes the Jewish Ghetto and Cannaregio Special
Venice’s Jewish Ghetto — the world’s first, dating back to 1516 — is a place of quiet power. Its tall, narrow buildings rise around a peaceful campo where centuries of history settle into the stones. The food here honours that heritage — traditional Jewish-Venetian pastries, artichoke dishes, and cicchetti with a story behind every bite. It’s a corner of Venice that feels deeply personal, far removed from the tourist tide just minutes away.
Cannaregio, the wider neighborhood embracing the Ghetto, is where everyday Venice lives and eats. Its long, sunlit fondamente and canal-side walkways lead past local bacari pouring ombre of wine and serving tiny plates of baccalà mantecato, sarde in saor, and creamy polenta. This is Venice without the performance — neighbours chatting at the bar, fishmongers selling the morning catch, and family-run trattorias where a plate of bigoli in salsa and a carafe of house wine cost less than a coffee in San Marco. Cannaregio rewards you for getting a little lost, feeding you simply and well in a part of the city that still belongs to the Venetians.

Lovely Venice with the charming Cecilia! Venice is a mystery to us with all its canals and restaurants and Cecilia made it all so wonderfully simple and fun as she delightfully took us on a tour of great food and friendship. We sampled so many Venetian dishes as we strolled for a great 3.5 hour tour!

Delicious and insightful tour of unsung districts We had a wonderful tour of the Cannaregio district and the Jewish quarter. Our guide, Joe, and his colleague, Flavia, were knowledgeable and delightful hosts. They shared lots of information about the food, history, and culture of the city and the districts. The food was delicious. The places we visited really put their best plates forward and we enjoyed a variety of dishes that were traditional classics and traditional with a unique twist.
It was an evening well spent and we now have even more excellent places to choose from when we want to eat in Venice.
I highly recommend this tour and strongly suggest that you make sure you start on an empty stomach--you will not go away hungry.

The absolute highlight of our Venice trip (Flavia is a AMAZING!!!!!) Honestly, if you do only one thing in Venice, make it this tour. I was a little skep that a "food tour" might feel too structured or touristy, especially in a city that can get as crowded as Venice. I couldn’t have been more wrong. From the second we met our guide, Flavia, it felt less like a formal tour and more like we were just hanging out with a really knowledgeable local friend who wanted to show off her neighborhood.
Flavia is just magic. She has this incredible warmth and energy that instantly made the whole group feel comfortable. You can tell she actually loves this city and its food culture—it’s not just a script for her. She took us down these quiet back alleys that we never would have found on our own, way away from the madness of St. Mark’s.
And the food? Unbelievable. We aren't just talking about a slice of pizza; this was proper, authentic stuff. I finally understand what the cicchetti culture is all about! The wine pairings were perfect, and by the end of it, I was absolutely stuffed and so happy.
It was such a relief to stop Googling "where to eat" and just trust Flavia to take us to the hidden spots. We laughed, we learned a ton, and we ate like kings.
Do yourself a favor: skip lunch before you go, and cross your fingers that you get Flavia as your guide! She truly made our trip special.

Great food, tour & host in Venice! Cecilia was great! This was my first food tour and she made it so worth while, it lasted around 3 hours and we was in a small group of 4, she was so friendly and had excellent knowledge about Venice, we truly learnt so much from her, lots of fun facts! The food & drink was also amazing, we had a focaccia pizza, cicchetti, artichoke risotto and a tiramisu alongside prosecco, white wine & a spritz, there wasn’t a single thing I didn’t enjoy. Would defo recommend and cannot wait to continue to use eating Europe for my future city breaks. Thank you Cecilia!

Dining with Purpose
We proudly support World Central Kitchen. Every tour you book helps provide meals to communities in crisis.
Our Venice food tours are led by locals who know a different city entirely — not the one on postcards, but the one where fishermen unload the morning catch, bacaro owners pour ombre for their regulars, and grandmothers argue about the proper way to make sarde in saor. They take you into the Venice that visitors rarely find, where the food is simple, the stories are real, and every cicchetto comes with a piece of the city's soul.
Cecilia
Born on the banks of the Po, today my heart beats for the magic of the Venetian lagoon.
I live on bread and pasta, with my soul steeped in a glass of good wine.
Don’t miss a glass of crisp Prosecco with a cicchetto of creamy baccalà mantecato! Never along the main street, always lost in the back alleys.
Daniela
Born in Milan and adopted by Venice in 2012. Travelled everywhere and I decided to settle here!
I love the bubbles of Prosecco which I pair with a cicchetto with creamy Baccala mantecato.
I recommend a spritz along the Zattere at sunset with a view of the Giudecca island.
Anna
Born and raised in Venice, I spent nearly 15 years abroad before returning to my hometown and now I love it even more.
I love all kinds of food and discovering flavors from around the world. My favorite Venetian dish is creamy baccalà mantecato served on warm polenta.
Getting lost in Venice is the best way to discover it! Wander through the narrow alleys of Castello district and get a real taste of local life.

Are tourists welcome in Venice?
Yes, absolutely. There’s an Italian concept, la serenissima, meaning “the most serene,” the historical nickname for the city itself. It speaks to the unique, magical calm that can be found here, a feeling we believe every visitor should experience.
You’ll find the spirit of la serenissima from locals when you connect with the city respectfully. It’s found when you support the local artisans in Cannaregio, keep to the right on narrow streets and bridges, and never swim in the canals. This is the authentic Venice experience.
It’s this connection we create on our Eating Europe tours. We step away from the crowds and take you to the places locals truly love, introducing you to the people behind the food and the stories that make this city one of a kind.
Tour Experience & Expectations
Will the guide speak my language?
Our guides are all fluent in English, and of course speak Italian as well. For requests for tours in other languages, please contact us.

Yes! You are welcome to take photos and videos of the food and scenery throughout your tour. If you would explicitly like to get photos of fellow guests or your guide, we kindly ask that you get their permission first.
Do I need to tip the guide?
Tips for our lovely guides are not required, but they are appreciated!
Will we visit the same places as other tours?
No. While some tours may have one or two stops which other groups visit (can’t help it if they’re popular!), Eating Europe are proud that the majority of stops on every Venice tour are restaurants and vendors who work exclusively with us.
Do you offer private or custom tours?
We do! Please see the “Book a Private Tour” option or contact us, and we can arrange a private or custom Venice tour to suit your specific needs.
Once upon a time, corporate events were all about ticking boxes: stick to the agenda, get everyone in the room, call it a success. But that approach doesn’t really fly anymore, especially in Europe. Things have shifted. Now, it’s just as much about what people feel as what they learn....
No matter what corner of Italy I’ve found myself in, I’ve rarely struggled to get my hands on quality pizza, and Venice is no different. I’ve gushed about Venice’s wine bars and where I’ve uncovered the finest gelato in Venice, but I don’t think I’ve given the pizza here the...
